Diabetes was overdiagnosed in <5% of cases. Conclusion: Over-and underdiagnosis are common in older patients. Explanations for overdiagnosis include subjective diagnostic criteria and the use of criteria not validated in older patients. Underdiagnosis was associated with long preclinical phases of disease or lack of sensitive diagnostic criteria. Sodium-related markers of health including blood pressure and markers of kidney function (urinary creatinine and albumin/creatinine ratio) and general health markers, such as Body Mass Index (BMI), were also not related to TRPV1-rs8065080 genotype. Although no significant relationships were found, these findings are an important contribution to the limited body of knowledge surround this SNP. They then completed an assessment burden questionnaire across five domains: difficulty, discomfort, pain, symptoms and test duration. Results: Test perception was generally favourable. Induced sputum had the greatest test burden perceived as being more difficult (mean 0.83, P=0.001), associated with more discomfort (mean 1.3, P<0.001), more painful (0.46, P=0.019), longer test duration (0.84, P<0.001) and worsening symptoms (0.55, P=0.001) than the questionnaires. FENO had a more favourable assessment but was assessed to be difficult to perform. Inhaler technique received the most favourable assessment. Conclusions: Older adults hold favourable perceptions to a range of tests that they might encounter in the course of their care for airway disease. The newer tests of sputum induction and FENO have some observed difficulties, in particular sputum induction. The results of this study can inform current practice by including details of the test and its associated adverse effects when conducting the test, as well as providing clear explanations of the utility of tests and how the results might aid in patient care.]]> Tue 26 Jun 2018 11:28:14 AEST ]]> Telomere shortening in elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment may be attenuated with ω-3 fatty acid supplementation: a randomized controlled pilot study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:28807 65 y with MCI were randomized to receive a supplement rich in the long-chain ω-3 PUFAs eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 1.67 g EPA + 0.16 g docosahexaenoic acid DHA/d; n = 12) or DHA (1.55 g DHA + 0.40 g EPA/d; n = 12), versus ω-6 PUFA linoleic acid (LA; 2.2 g/d; n = 9) for 6 mo. Results: The intervention did not show an increase in telomere length with treatment and there was a trend toward telomere shortening during the intervention period. Linear mixed modeling produced a robust model although statistically underpowered. Telomere shortening was greatest in the LA group (d = 0.21) than in the DHA (d = 0.12) and EPA groups (d = 0.06). However, relationships between sour taste genetics, mild cognitive impairment, and diet quality are yet to be elucidated. This study investigated the associations between the presence of the KCNJ2-rs236514 variant (A) allele, diet quality indices, and mild cognitive impairment evaluated by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), in a secondary cross-sectional analysis of data from the Retirement Health & Lifestyle Study. Data from 524 elderly Australians (≥65y) were analyzed, using standard least squares regression and nominal logistic regression modeling, with demographic adjustments applied. Results showed that the presence of the KCNJ2-A allele is associated with increased proportions of participants scoring in the range indicative of mild or more severe cognitive impairment (MMSE score of ≤26) in the total cohort, and males. These associations remained statistically significant after adjusting for age, sex, and diet quality indices. The absence of association between the KCNJ2-A allele and cognitive impairment in women may be related to their higher diet quality scores in all indices. The potential link between sour taste genotype and cognitive impairment scores may be due to both oral and extra-oral functions of sour taste receptors. Further studies are required on the role and relationship of neurotransmitters, sour taste genotypes and sour taste receptors in the brain, and dietary implications, to identify potential risk groups or avenues for therapeutic or prophylactic interventions.]]> Thu 08 Sep 2022 14:04:41 AEST ]]> A qualitative study examining the preparedness of dental hygiene students for a service-learning placement in residential aged care https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31149 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:43:36 AEDT ]]> A longitudinal analysis of older Australian women's consultations with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners, 1996-2005 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:7331 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:35:12 AEDT ]]> Effect of nutritional supplements on wound healing in home-nursed elderly: a randomized trial https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:1624 0.05). The experimental group received 12 sessions of group music therapy (two 30-min sessions per week for 6 weeks), and the control group received usual care. Data were collected 4 times: (1) 1 week before the intervention. ; (2) the 6th session of the intervention. ; (3) the 12th session of the intervention. ; (4) 1 month after the final session. Results: Group music therapy reduced depression in persons with dementia. Improvements in depression occurred immediately after music therapy and were apparent throughout the course of therapy. The cortisol level did not significantly decrease after the group music therapy. Cognitive function significantly improved slightly at the 6th session, the 12th session, and 1 month after the sessions ended; in particular, short-term recall function improved. The group music therapy intervention had the greatest impact in subjects with mild and moderate dementia. Conclusion: The group music intervention is a noninvasive and inexpensive therapy that appeared to reduce elders’ depression. It also delayed the deterioration of cognitive functions, particularly short-term recall function.
